In the Event of a Collision:  Tips to Make a Difficult Experience Easier

Know what to do (and what not to do) if you're involved in an accident

Being involved in an accident is always stressful!  But there are measures you

can take to make the best of a tough situation.  Immediately after the collision:

Take a breath... Try to relax (we know it’s hard). Then check to make sure you’re all right. No injuries? Great. Now make sure no one else in your vehicle or the other vehicle is injured.

If there's been an injury... call 911 for help. Don’t leave the scene of an accident until all matters have been taken care of. Move your vehicle only if its position puts you in danger or you're instructed to move it by a police officer.

Give only the necessary & requested info... to police & other parties involved in the accident. Don't spontaneously discuss your personal condition, mental frame of mind, or anything unrelated to the accident. This will help guard against post-accident legal action.

If you need roadside assistance... call GM Roadside Asst. The #'s in your Owner’s Manual.

If your vehicle can't be driven... know where the towing service will be taking it. Get a card from the tow truck operator or write down the driver’s name, the service’s name & phone number.

Remove valuables from your car... before it’s towed away. Make sure this includes your insurance info & registration - if you keep these items in your vehicle.

Gather the important info... you’ll need from the other driver.

If it’s possible, call your Insurance Co... from the scene of the accident. They’ll walk you thru the info they’ll need. If they ask for a police report, don’t worry. Just phone or go to the police department’s headquarters the next day & you can get a copy of the report for a nominal fee. In some states with “no fault” insurance laws, a report may not be necessary. This is especially true if there are no injuries & both vehicles are driveable.

Choose a reputable collision repair facility... for your vehicle. When you select us (Chevrolet of Tigard) to fix the damage, you’re certain to be comfortable. And that's important because you’ll have to feel comfortable with our work for a long time.

Once you have an estimate... read it carefully & make sure you understand what work will be performed on your vehicle. If you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask for an explanation. Reputable shops, like ours, welcome this opportunity.

The only way to get genuine GM Parts... ask for them. Ask your insurance & collision repair facility rep if your car will be repaired with genuine GM Parts - that's all we use. If the answer's “yes,” then you’ll be getting the value, safety, endurance & peace-of-mind you expect. If they say imitation parts might be used, you have the right to refuse them. It’s your choice.
